The entire cast

There were also video tributes to among others Rosenblatt, Kousssevitzky, Kwartin and on one the work that Chai Lifeline do here in Toronto.

The entire program was 2 hours and 50 minutes including a 10 minute intermission. This was the greatest assemblage in one place of cantors in Toronto. It was also the first cantorial event held outside a shul. It took place in Roy Thompson Hall which seats about 2600. I would estimate maybe 2000 were in attendance. There was approximately 70 people in the "Philharmonic experience" and approximately 30 men in the choir.

It also reinforced how lucky we have been in the past and present to have so many talented cantors in both Montreal and Toronto.

It was an outstanding event and throughly enjoyed by all who attended.

Wow, that sure sounds like an event nobody should have missed. Any video clips/audio recordings posted anywhere for us to see?

I'd like to point out that the Malavsky Family performed in that same hall in the 1950's. He was a chazzan.

Can anyone provide some background for those of us unfamiliar wtih Cantor Benjamin Maissner?

btw - Does Simcha Levenstein attend some sort of yeshiva or is he just taking a sabbatical? :)

Maissner studied in the Bilu School in Tel Aviv and was a student of Shlomo Ravitz. Malovany was his chaver back then. I know he's been at Holy Blossom in Toronto for more than twenty years.

schwartzesq: I bow to your superior knowledge. However it wasn't in the same hall. It was built in 1982. They were probably at the Old Massey Hall. It had a capacity of about 2300 at that time. Any idea how many attended?

bluechazzan et al: I have uploaded the bios for Cantor Maissner and Cantor Sufrin. You will find it in the same folder as the shows I upload:

It is at the top of the list:

Previously I did not mention the Evening Chairman.
However I discovered that they although residing in Toronto now previously lived in New York and Israel. They have only been back in Toronto for one year. Let me quote from their message:

"What you are witnessing tonight is the work of a group of young adults who took time to ensure that Chai Lifeline Canada receives the recognition it so rightfully deserves so it can continue to be a beacon of hope for those in need of special services for their sick child."

Yasser Koach to Shoshana and Yummy Schachter who chaired this amazing evening.

I'm not sure how many attended. Sorry for confusing the halls. Not being from Toronto it was an easy mistake to make.

Not a problem schwartzesq. I only mentioned it to clarify.

BTW do you know if Cantor Helfgot had performed in Toronto previously and if so where it was?

A while ago he was supposed to perform in Eric Moses's schul, but was prevented from doing so by rabbinic fiat.

Yes I know. I actually have the tickets for that concert. It was to have been held in the chapel of Beth Sholom Synagogue. It would have been a nice intimate setting. It was underwriten by one of their members. They had mailed them out before it was canceled.
