Our Own Pavarotti
By: T. Cohen

He has drawn sold-out crowds worldwide. He has a voice that astounds, inspires, and exhilarates. He is world-renowned Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot, indisputably this generation’s greatest cantor, also dubbed the ‘Jewish Pavarotti’. And once again he will take center-stage as leading performer at Cantors World’s Annual December concert in Lincoln Center.

Just five years ago, had you asked the Holocaust-surviving generation if the classic Jewish music of back then would make a comeback, responses would have been dubious, at best. But Cantors World has made great strides in reviving Chazzanut, and promoting it in a way that a vast following of young and old, both religious and secular has ensued.

What once was an age-old art, expected only – if anywhere – in the synagogue, can now be found in prestigious concert halls around the world. It has brought Jewish music recognition and respect in the secular world, and Cantor Helfgot has been an integral part of that.

On Sunday, December 2nd, Cantors World will present another outstanding event at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall. Cantor Yitzchak Meir Helfgot and guest performers will be accompanied by members of the illustrious New York Philharmonic, directed by Maestro Mordechai Sobol and guest conductor Maestro Matthew Lazar.
